At the Homestead

Something very exciting has been happening recently at camp… we are getting the homestead ready for the summer! With new animals and growing plants, there’s a lot going on down there and we can’t wait for you to see it.

We currently have four chickens who were brought to Arrowhead at just a day old. It’s been really fun to watch them grow. When they’re big enough, they’ll start laying eggs, but for now they spend their days exploring the ground looking for bugs to eat. There’s currently a naming contest going on for the chickens, so if you have any good ideas, let us know!

Besides the chickens, our other animals are two Nigerian Dwarf goats - Folsom and Clovis. They’re twin brothers (even though they look different) and they love to play together. Folsom is a little more adventurous and loves getting to know new friends - especially if they bring a snack. Clovis likes to watch what his brother does before trying anything new and loves to climb as high as he can on anything in the yard - even people!

The other fun thing about the homestead is the vegetable garden. We’ve been starting some seeds indoors to transplant when it gets warmer (like tomatoes and peppers, yum!) and directly sowing other seeds in our new raised beds (like carrots and lettuce). Some of these plants will go to the dining hall to be used at meal times to serve all the campers and staff during the summer. Can you imagine being at the cookout, eating a slice of watermelon that you pulled off the vine yourself?

Whether it’s watching how fast a zucchini grows or playing with the goats, there’s always something new and fun to learn, see, and do at the homestead.
