Meet the Owners

Camp Arrowhead has a creative and enthusiastic crew of owners on board. They all bring different skills and experiences to share, and they share an important history of working at summer camp together. Together, they know how special camp is and work hard to bring that magic to Arrowhead.

First, we have Max King. He grew up outside of Atlanta and started going to a boys summer camp when he was 8 years old. Camp remained a big part of his life growing up, and he returned to teach traditional Native American craft and lore activities along with serving as a cabin counselor for the youngest boys on camp. In addition to the many skills Max learned as a camper and counselor, camp facilitated some of the most important relationships in his life. Those include his lifelong mentor and our advisor, Jim Kurtts, friend and co-owner, Tommy Carroll, and (of course!) his wife, Alli- they even got engaged at camp! Max is a true maker. He loves to learn how to craft new things from ulu knives to leather Spartan helmets. Around camp, you’ll find him efficiently fixing things and finding creative solutions to problems. He’s also been known to come into the office with random things found in the woods (“Look at this turtle shell! What species do you think it is?”)

Meet Alli

Alli King is a true gem. She grew up in Virginia and worked at day camps before being convinced by a friend to jump into the overnight camp life at a North Carolina boys camp. She taught arts and crafts along with horseback riding during her summers between studying at the University of Virginia to become a teacher. She’s currently teaching sixth grade at Flat Rock Middle School and is the main force behind our social media. When she finds the time, she fits in helping out in various projects around camp, even sacrificing a Chaco sandal to the bottom of the lake to pull the old blob out! Her not-so-secret superpowers include cooking delicious black bean burgers, raising the coolest two year old around, and being incredibly welcoming to everyone.

Meet Tommy

Tommy Carroll grew up in Maryland. He went to horseback riding camp there, but didn’t experience the joy of overnight camp until his family suggested he’d be great at the boys camp that his cousins went to (where, as you’ve probably picked up, he met Max and Alli). He taught blacksmithing there for eight years and was a great cabin counselor for the oldest group of boys every session. Tommy is well known for his incredible artwork and talent at the forge (every fall, he runs the blacksmith shop at the Maryland Renaissance Festival), but he also loves backpacking, frisbee, and just being outside. He has a big imagination that constantly spurs new and fun projects at camp, like a hidden trail. He finds awesome counselors and is a master of knocking out tasks on the to do list. Tommy is excited to see Arrowhead’s forest get some adventurous use again this summer while playing games, building forts, and exploring in the creek.
