Forging, Crafting, and Creating in the Blue Ridge Mountains

At Camp Arrowhead for Boys, we believe that every boy has the power to create something lasting — not just with his hands, but with his heart and imagination.
That belief is the foundation of what we call The Maker Spirit: a drive to build, explore, and learn through doing.

From the sound of hammers ringing in the blacksmith shop to the scent of fresh-cut wood in the woodshop, and the hum of sewing machines in Threadquarters, our campers spend their summers learning real skills — and discovering that creativity is an adventure in itself.

Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Hendersonville, North Carolina, Camp Arrowhead has always been more than a summer camp. It’s a place where tradition meets innovation, where craftsmanship still matters, and where boys learn that the best tools they’ll ever have are patience, curiosity, and confidence.

The Blacksmith Shop: Where Fire Teaches Focus

The forge is the heartbeat of the Maker Spirit of camp. Each summer, boys learn how to safely work with fire and steel, transforming raw metal into something useful and beautiful.
They shape hooks, tools, and custom creations that reflect their own growing skill — all while learning lessons about focus, heat, and control.

Blacksmithing at Camp Arrowhead teaches patience and perseverance. Every spark is a test of balance between strength and care. The result? A camper who walks away knowing he can handle challenges both in the forge and in life.

The Woodshop: Building Confidence, One Cut at a Time

In the woodshop, campers discover how imagination and craftsmanship come together. Using hand tools, they learn to measure, shape, and assemble pieces that are both creative and functional.
Projects range from simple birdhouses to intricate boxes or knife handles paired with blacksmithing work.

Each boy leaves the shop with more than a finished piece — he leaves with pride in something he made himself. In a world that moves fast, the woodshop teaches the quiet rhythm of working with intention, and the satisfaction of seeing effort become reality.

Arts & Crafts: Creativity Without Limits

Arts & Crafts is where imagination takes the lead. Here, campers dive into painting, drawing, sculpting, nature crafts, and camp-themed art projects that celebrate personal expression. Every session feels like a new adventure with Ms. Lynne— one day might bring leaf-print bandanas or hand-painted signs, and the next could involve clay work, paracord designs, or tie dye!

For many boys, Arts & Crafts is their first chance to explore creativity without boundaries. There are no wrong answers here — just color, texture, and the joy of making something completely their own. Many projects even tie into our Arrowhead Adventures, turning camp stories and legends into works of art.

It’s more than an art class; it’s a creative community where every boy’s imagination has a place to shine.

Threadquarters: The Camp Sewing Studio

Threadquarters: Camp Arrowhead’s one-of-a-kind sewing studio — part maker space, part creative workshop, and all heart.
Here, boys learn the fundamentals of hand-stitching, machine sewing, and textile design. They create custom aprons, hats, banners, bags, and even wearable camp projects.

Threadquarters isn’t just about fabric and thread; it’s about learning to design, problem-solve, and see ideas through from start to finish. Sewing builds patience, attention to detail, and an appreciation for craftsmanship — the same core values that run through every part of camp life.

It’s where creativity meets utility, and where campers discover that precision and artistry can coexist perfectly.

The Bushcraft Hut: Learning from the Land

Beyond the workshops lies our natural classroom — the forest. Here, campers practice bushcraft and survival skills that build self-reliance and respect for nature. They learn to build fires, tie knots, identify plants, and construct shelters using what the land provides.

Bushcraft at Arrowhead connects boys to the world around them. It teaches that survival isn’t about domination — it’s about understanding. In learning to live comfortably outdoors, campers discover resilience, resourcefulness, and the quiet confidence that comes from working with the natural world instead of against it.

The Maker Spirit in Every Camper

No matter which craft speaks to them — metal, wood, fabric, or wilderness — every camper becomes part of the Maker Spirit that defines Arrowhead. It’s not about perfection; it’s about process.
When a boy creates something tangible with his own two hands, he builds something invisible too: character.

That’s why MAKING has become such a defining part of the Camp Arrowhead experience. Whether they’re forging iron, carving wood, sewing in Threadquarters, or striking sparks in the woods, boys learn that they are capable of more than they imagined — and that real growth happens when you make, try, and do.

The Legacy of Making

Since 1937, Camp Arrowhead has been a place where boys learn by doing. The Maker Spirit is our way of carrying that tradition forward — honoring craftsmanship while inspiring a new generation to create with purpose.

We invite you to discover it for yourself. Visit our Maker Camp Session Page to explore our blacksmithing, woodworking, arts, sewing, and bushcraft offerings — or learn more about how our North Carolina summer camp helps boys build confidence, creativity, and lifelong skills in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Because at Camp Arrowhead, we don’t just make things.
We make makers.
